Get Involved

Sea Search monitoring sessions are seasonal and generally take between 2-3 hours to complete. There is no cost in becoming a Sea Search volunteer as all monitoring equipment is supplied to you on the day, unless your are involved in sub-tidal monitoring; whereby you must supply your own SCUBA or snorkelling equipment.

As a volunteer you don’t need to be a marine biologist or have scientific training or skills, we teach you everything you need to know on the day. Our program is designed for participants of all age groups and backgrounds.

We find our volunteers enjoy working in groups during monitoring sessions as they can share their stories whilst helping each other collect important data. After a monitoring session, groups frequently visit their local café to catch up on what has been happening.

All you need to do is arrive at the monitoring location at the scheduled time in appropriate clothing. It’s as easy as that!

What will I learn?

1. How to use scientific equipment and practices to collect data.
2. How to identify the marine flora and fauna.
3. An understanding of temperate marine habitats and their ecology.
4. How to enter monitoring data into the database.
5. How data can be used by management agencies.
6. The uniqueness of your local marine protected area.
