April 2010 update

Andy Myers (RLS Coordinator NSW) has finished up his role as Reef Life Survey (RLS)  Sydney-based volunteer coordinator at People & Parks Foundation.  Andy has been a valuable member of the PPF and RLS team in his time with us - leading numerous group surveys and both maintaining and promoting volunteer enthusiasm for the program. Andy has taken up a position at Oceanwatch and we thank him for his contributions and wish him all the best. We're also happy to mention that Andy has continued to conduct RLS surveys since he started his new job - testament to his commitment to the program goals and his genuine interest in marine conservation - and we look forward to catching up with him next time we're in Sydney for a survey or two!

Reef Life Survey has been busy in Victoria with survey sites including; Elwood, Point Cooke, Altona, and Williamstown.

Kangaroo Island, 12-15th March 2010

RLS re-joined forces with the Kangaroo Island NRM Board again, for another weekend of surveys on Kangaroo Island (12th-15th March).
The diving was based out of Middle River, on the north of the island, and although the water temperature wasn’t exactly what everyone was expecting (16-18 degrees), the crew still managed to get a stack of surveys done in the four days - 37 surveys in total.

Reef Life Survey have been diving all over the country this summer, with survey trips taking place in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Western Australia.

Derwent Estuary Survey Trip TAS, 13-15 November 2009

The RLS team got together for some local surveys in the Derwent Estuary in Hobart from November 13-15 – on Sue Wragge’s boat ‘Underwater Adventures’. Throughout the trip, we surveyed a range of noticeably impacted and relatively natural reefs on both sides of the estuary, including sites at Manning Reef, Ralph’s Bay and also in the proposed extension to the Tinderbox Marine Reserve. Sites varied from rubbly reef with no macroalgae in Ralphs Bay to Ecklonia dominated sites near Tinderbox. Overall, we recorded 30 species of fish and over 60 macroinvertebrate and cryptic fish species.

Port Phillip Bay VIC/ Two Bays Program, January 2010

RLS recently headed back to Port Phillip Bay VIC as part of the Two Bays program through Pelican Expeditions. For this, we were invited to do a day’s diving from the SV Pelican – a fantastic 19m catamaran set up specifically for marine research. From the Pelican we surveyed Parks Victoria Marine Park monitoring sites at Point Nepean in Port Phillip Bay. The surveys were successful and allowed the completion of the set of sites in the Point Nepean Sanctuary Zone of the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park for this summer. Overall, 48 species of fish and 51 invertebrates & cryptic fish species were recorded.

  November 2009 update

Our Victorian Reef Life Survey divers have been busy as bees despite the cool waters of early spring.  Don, Alan and Jen have been busy in Port Phillip Heads Marine Park and Paul has been keeping busy with shore dives all over including one with Jen and Jacqui at Pt Linley Reef, which had fantastic invertebrate and plant life.

The Reef Life Survey website has updated locations on the map of where everyone has been busily surveying, so check it out at www.reeflifesurvey.com

Reef Life Survey is now also on Facebook, so join up and keep an eye on it for upcoming trips in your area in addition to the RLS forum.

The Reef Life Survey diver Safety code is finished and has been sent around to all volunteers - please contact the crew if you haven’t received it.

Anyone wanting to do surveys in Victorian Marine Protected Areas please contact Jacqui Pocklington prior to your dives so she can update Parks Victoria and Fisheries (we need to use our permit) at jpocklin@peopleandparks.org

There is an upcoming training session for a few new people in December, so we look forward to meeting them and get out diving with them soon and there willl also be boat diving organised for January 23-24 in Port Phillip Bay, conact Jacqui if you're interested.

August 2009 update

Our last group dive at South Road Reef Bommies (Brighton) found few fish but urchins in abundance as Paige, Amelia and Tim braved the cold waters to record the winter marine life.

Thank you to all that came to the Reef Life Survey information session held at the Clyde Hotel on Sunday the 28th June to learn about the program and see Rick show us a taste of the amazing marine life Reef Life Surveyors get to interact with.

May 2009 update

Currently the Friends of Beware Reef are our most active Victorian Reef Life Survey group, so thank you for a fantastic effort and keep up the good work!  Recently there was a training trip held in Port Phillip for some new volunteer divers and we hope to be running another training trip soon. Despite the cold and the windy conditions a good time was had by all and we improved our skills in monitoring methods and fish identification.
