Linking volunteer divers, scientists and managers in marine research and conservation
Reef Life Survey is a program designed to capture and provide the information needed to best manage our marine environment through the long term for conservation, recreation and resource utilisation.
Through this program, skilled recreational divers are trained in the technical knowledge required to scientifically survey marine communities. Trained divers will also be provided sufficient resources and incentives to achieve this task, with ongoing survey data directly flowing through to government managers to assist in decision making. Specifically, Reef Life Survey aims to:
- Establish close linkages between recreational divers, research scientists, and coastal managers
- Track long-term impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems
- Assess the impacts of marine invasive species on marine biodiversity
- Identify threats to reef ecosystems associated with fishing, sedimentation and pollution
- Identify which marine species are threatened, and track population trends for threatened species.
