Through a generous $5,000 donation from the Shell Geelong Refinery Community Grants Program, People & Parks Foundation is pleased to partner with Parks Victoria to announce the completion of the Freckled Duck Enclosure at Serendip Sanctuary. The Freckled Duck is one of Australia's rarest waterfowl species. The captive birds will allow us to interpret the importance of species diversity, threatened species recovery programs and the value of conserving wetland habitats.
The funds, from the Shell employee contribution program were used to further develop the enclosure; revegetate the ponds and display area, create habitat including nesting boxes/shelters and develop and install educative signage. The facility not only protects an endangered species but educates people about the influence they can have on saving a species and changing negative behaviours to assist the environment. Norlane High School are a registered Environmental Corps school at Serendip and visit the site weekly to assist in on-ground maintenance and projects. Along with local schools that regularly visit Serendip; Lara Primary School, Lara Lake Primary School, St Anthony’s Primary School and Lara Secondary College, the park caters for up to 9,000 school visits per year. The enclosure will officially be opened on 16 September. |
