Helping Kinglake and Marysville Communities Reconnect with Nature

post fire rebirth

The Green Connections project – Kinglake and Marysville, aims to engage bushfire affected communities in hands on environmental fire recovery projects to improve their physical and mental health and well being.  This project brings together the community and a range of key stakeholders to restore four sites across Kinglake and Marysville. Sites were selected to meet both conservation (specifically post fire environmental rehabilitation) outcomes and community (human) health and well-being outcomes, and were chosen by the community.  The project is designed to be community driven and includes activities that involve being with friends and family, providing companionship and an opportunity for people to get together and work together.

Planning is underway for a range of environmental rehabilitation works including restoring and developing walking track at Cathedral Range State Park and improving picnic and visitor facilities at Wallaby Springs Reserve. The project will also look at options for developing a trail link between Number 1 Creek and Bollygum Park. At Buxton Silver Gums Reserve, there will be community planting activities to revegetate the area. A broader program of events and activities for all sites will provide opportunities to get involved in plant propagation, community tree planting days, signage development, walks and talks and much more.

This project has been funded by the Victorian Bushfire Appeals Fund and is being managed by the People and Parks Foundation, working closely with the local Community Recovery Committees and land managers. It will create special places in nature for the Kinglake and Marysville community to come together in the future.
